I've been thinking about adding a file browser interface for information related to projects.
In my scenario a project has files associated with it and they can be changed by other users (same idea of a CVS), each file can have permissions for other users that could be additionaly inherited from its parent directory.
I've been looking at the Gallery module which has a similar interface but it's global and only supports images.
I wonder if anybody has already worked with this idea or what suggestions do you guys have.

This features already have Utils/Attachment module, it's used in projects as "Notes" tab. The only difference is that attachments has flat layout and because of it, it doesn't inherit any permissions...

In my opinion it could be interesting view, but there is one little problem... Do you have your home/documents folder in order? Your friend sitting at your computer and looking for some document file would easily find it? If we have directories, user looking for some file have to click in everywhere.
I think it should be implemented as additional view, so you can switch between flat/directories.

What do you think?

I would like to put my 5 cents here.
Storing files the way we are used to - meaning files have names and are organized in directories - has serious limitations, because the are not related with any other objects. Therefore a file named "Proposal Number 123" stored in directory "Proposals 2008" has very little information associated with it.
epesi stores documents as attachments and they can be attached to contacts, companies, projects etc. This way I can think of a proposal created for a company ABC and I can recreate the relation between the document and the company. I can find a record of the company and from there open Notes tab and find any related document. The main difference here is that files exist in a context of another object.
Additionally the document can a have very long description and this description is searchable.
In the future we will introduce an interface which will allow you to browse notes based on date when it was created - something like a journal. You will be able to ask a question: I remember that I created this file two weeks ago - please show me all files uploaded in this time period organized chronologically.

Thanks a lot for the answers, Your explanation made it all clear, i didn't really see the attachment option in the ticket/project/task/company tabs before, I really apologize and your idea of searchable content makes it even nicer.

You need to create a "Note". In Note interface, bellow the text box you will have an option to upload a file.
