In Premium Sync it appears that to link a contact to a customer you need to provide the record_id of the customer
The same seems to apply in linking companies to parent companies is this the case or am I doing something wrong?

I would link to link contacts to the company by company name and similar with parent companies.

Is this possible?

No. Just id. Names may be not unique.

I'm new to PHP so could anyone help with a snippet of code that could take an account name and return the customer ID.

I have made my account names unique by concatenating the name with the account number from the ERP system they are taken from.
