Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class Acl in ...

I've tried to upgrade from an early version of EPESI 1.1.0 to the latest version 1.5.6 and have come across the following error message:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class Acl in /homepages/43/d241687767/htdocs/clients/modules/Base/Acl/AclCommon_0.php on line 183
Does this problem look familiar to anyone? Can you help me resolve?

You are upgrading from a very old version. Try to upgrade to version 1.4 first and then to the latest one.

If this does not work you may have to go back to earlier version like 1.2 and then try 1.5.6

In the future please do not stay at such an old release - 1.1.0 is almost 4 years old.
